Highway Commissioner Joe Jedlovec received the Bronze Medal with "V" Device

Highway Commissioner Joe Jedlovec received the Bronze Medal with "V" Device at a special ceremony held on Armed Forces Day at the Cantigny First Division Museum.

The Bronze Medal with the "V" Device designation signifies that he was awarded the medal during direct combat with the enemy.  This is not his first Bronze Star.  He received one earlier as well as two Purple Heart awards and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry during his time in Vietnam.

Without thought of risk to himself, Joe put himself in harm's way under continuous enemy fire to provide aid to an injured Squad Leader.  He helped organize a team to get the injured Squad Leader to safety.  Joe, who had the rank of Staff Sergeant, moved from position to position and directed the platoon.  He was able to keep the unit together and deliver a devastating attack upon insurgent forces.

Our congratulations go out to Joe and his family for this special and long overdue honor.

We are not alone in our congratulations as approximately 150 people were on hand on May 21, 2011 for the ceremony.  Cantigny First Division Museum Director, Paul Herbert, welcomed everyone and gave a very nice presentation of Joe and his accomplishments, as well as an update on what he has been doing since returned from the Vietnam War.  We watched as a Major and Sergeant Major presented the Medal to Joe.

Joe received a State of Illinois House of Representatives’ 97th General Assembly Resolution with Recognition and Congratulations acquired by Rep. Mike Fortner as well as a State of Illinois Senate 97th General Assembly Resolution with Recognition and Congratulations acquired by Senator Tom Johnson.

On behalf of Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, Dona Smith, Winfield Township Supervisor presented Joe with the Governor's Proclamation that declared May 21, 2011 as Staff Sergeant Joseph V. Jedlovec Jr. Day in Illinois.
